Glacier Tours

THINGS TO DO:

Glacier Tours

Touch the ice formed by snow that fell 400 years ago. Can you feel the ancient glacier moving beneath your feet at 3 cm (1.2 in) a day? Capture a rivulet of icy blue water, naturally filtered through the ages.

Discover the Athabasca Glacier, part of a colossal icefield – the largest in North America – whose run-off feeds three different oceans. The Columbia Icefield was formed in the last Ice Age, when most of western Canada’s mountains were cloaked in ice. It spans a vast 325 km2 (125 mi2) and reaches a staggering depth of 360 m (1180 ft).

A massive “Ice Explorer” bus with giant rubber wheels takes you right up onto the glacier. Or take a walk on the wild side and immerse yourself in the majesty and beauty of the glacier on a three-hour guided “ice walk,” where you will experience firsthand the power and immensity of a place literally frozen in time.
